Company Press Release

uMember.com and Patelco CU Join Forces to Offer Customers Online Shopping Without the Use of a Credit Card

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 13, 2000--uMember.com Inc. (OTCBB:UMEM - news), an online membership discount megastore, and Patelco Credit Union teamed up to give members the ability to engage in online shopping without the use of a credit card.

``We are very proud to be partnering with Patelco. Its management team is known in the industry as the leaders in embracing new technologies,'' said Leon Hasson, president of uMember.com. ``We are looking forward to offering this technology to other credit unions as well as helping them bring more value and savings to their members.''

uMember.com and Patelco accomplished the project by setting up member accounts on the uMember.com secure site. A member who makes a purchase has money transferred directly from their Patelco account and deposited into uMember.com's account, eliminating the need for a credit card transaction entirely.

Patelco's 180,000 members are eligible for Internet banking services and credit card-free transactions on uMember.com. The co-branded, online community will soon offer auctions, chat, news and more, which Patelco's members will be able to access as well.

Scott Waite, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Patelco CU, cited two reasons for eliminating credit cards from Web-based shopping: ``We wanted to eliminate the interchange expenses of a credit card transaction -- about 1 to 2% of purchase price -- saving our union members money. Also, there's no credit card number at all, so it cuts down on fraud potential.''

Waite said the project has worked out well and he is excited about teaming up with uMember.com, which offers nearly a million products at discounts of up to 80% to the members of its affiliated organizations.

If members want to make a purchase with the credit union's credit card or take out a loan to make a purchase, they may do so. Members may even take out a home-equity line of credit to buy items from uMember.com.

``Members can make a purchase with something that's tax deductible as mortgage interest. That's an attractive option,'' added Waite.
